You should have checked the subtitles before adding such a remark in the content...

Other than that the post was very interesting and entertaining

Rashminder kaurRashminderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04216797544159193207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-60953834197066509132008-12-17T20:31:00.000-08:002008-12-17T20:31:00.000-08:00Brahmanadam - Welcome to the PPCC! Since we seem to be on the same wavelength in our love of big, zany and intense, any reccomendations?a ppcc representativehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03533616493105736109noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-14785441083820604612008-12-17T08:25:00.000-08:002008-12-17T08:25:00.000-08:00Was Beta a feminist triumph? I don't know. Did it ...Was Beta a feminist triumph? I don't know. Did it kick ass? Hell yeah! Maybe I loved it so much because I'm a gay man who gets off on diva death matches -- kind of like Alexis vs. Krystal on DYNASTY (even though I didn't actually watch that show). Or maybe it's because I grew up motherless and ended up with a less-than-ideal stepmother. Remind me to talk to my therapist about that.

All I know is that Beta is magnificent! Yeah, the slapsticky content was beyond irritating. And I really get sick of main characters who are simpletons (Anil Kapoor was great, though). But come on -- Beta reached operatic heights. That stepmother was fantastic. Anil Kapoor's rage toward those who would hurt her was beautifully intense. The evil son's wife -- the one who kept yelling, "Shut up! Bloody servant!" -- was delicious. And of course Madhuri could not have been better. Oh, and the music? "Dhak Dhak Karne Laga" is one of the best numbers ever -- both the song and the scene.

I actually went out and bought this movie and have now seen it several times, having shown it to friends on various occasions. The set-up sucks you in and the movie never lets up (although it does lag just a big).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-37810814397116073462008-11-30T18:30:00.000-08:002008-11-30T18:30:00.000-08:00I adore this movie, and my ANIL is soooooo cuuuutt...I adore this movie, and my ANIL is soooooo cuuuutttteeee! I refuse any qualms about the Anil coyness I love it and thats that, its a staple rule in the ANil Pradesh he has to be coy giddy and say hah heyy! I love Madhuri here she's such a take-charge lady for the coy Anil!Rumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10104185865100510017noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-20320759754628094402008-11-30T16:11:00.000-08:002008-11-30T16:11:00.000-08:00Amrita - Beti and Miss India, ha! This almost makes me forget the Ram Gopal Varma/No Entry stuff.

I agree that the household melodrama gets really old, really fast, but I blame that all squarely on Anupam. You know who who have been a better Evil Stepbro? That headless guy from Virasat! He's excellent (and a stud).

Memsaab - Heeee! To each their own; I like the "simple man/bhola" routine (e.g. Raaaaj).

Bollyviewer - That's a good point! But I always reckon, better an empowered evil witch woman than an unempowered martyr. That is, I don't think women need to be portrayed in an exclusively positive light to send a fem message. Agreed though that the saas/bahu drama is a bit over-done... but at least this time the bahu kicked ass and wins! (Rather than everyone capitulating to the saas' iron will, since "Mom is sacred" etc etc.)

Mads was amaaaazing.a ppcc representativehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03533616493105736109noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-82849942784440505272008-11-30T14:26:00.000-08:002008-11-30T14:26:00.000-08:00I watched this movie way back when it came out and...I watched this movie way back when it came out and remember thoroughly enjoying it (strictly because of Mads). I even thought it was very feminist, but dont think so anymore. It has the woman taking the upper hand, true. But it also endorses the patriarchal claim that the "female is deadlier than the male" and "root of all original wickedness/sin"! It also strictly enforces the evil mother-in-law paradigm. I would find it truly feminist if the woman was liberating the man from another man or the cruelties of a patriarch.

I think the movie was vastly successful because of Mads charms and also its novelty value. Now of course it reads as an edited version of the rash of Saas-bahu soaps that infect the Indian TV screens!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-73557752087673054922008-11-30T09:10:00.000-08:002008-11-30T09:10:00.000-08:00It was very feminist, which I liked, and I loved M...It was very feminist, which I liked, and I loved Madhuri's character. But it got so melodramatic and tiresome after a while...also I found Anil's character a little TOO stupid and coy.

I would have liked it better had he grown a spine and helped Madhuri out a little. She was waaaay too good for him.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-77008957506880434162008-11-30T05:57:00.000-08:002008-11-30T05:57:00.000-08:00Yup, yup very feminist - in fact, Anil Kapoor was ...Yup, yup very feminist - in fact, Anil Kapoor was the original SRK in that he used to regularly appear in movies where his heroines walked away with meaty roles and much of the acclaim. He used to kid that this movie should have been called "Beti" and Mr. India should have been called "Miss India" (he wasn't PC-forward enough to know it should've been MS. India, I guess).

However, I still think this movie sucks. I don't know why but it just annoys me, except for Mads' first few scenes culminating in her attacking the mob with the scythe. What I particularly liked about the first barn scene was that he GOT the message when she said she wasn't interested. Once they got to the house and the endless battle of the night began, I lost interest.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
