I so wanted...I so, so, so wanted to like this film. I so wanted to understand why it has become an adored classic in Indian cinema. It had been sold as the ultimate example of onscreen chemistry. Well, my spirit was willing but my heart's just not engaged.

I eagerly awaited my Netflix allotment with this film. Threw it into the DVD player and settled down on the couch to be swept off my feet like only SRK and Kajol can do. Sadly, I realized immediately that I'd seen this film years before and had totally dismissed it. It was no better this time around. The screen chemistry between SRK and Kajol was a little above room temp but not much. The story was "mehh" quality. No, I am not an NRI or even Desi-descended so it's completely possible I am missing some vital thread of culture.

The best scene for me was the "morning after" scene in Switzerland where hero must assure heroine that he's not into sleeping with drunken or unconscious women. The worst scene for me was the slapfest during the conclusion. Over the top, kinda abusive and not really effective at making whatever point it so wished to make.

I am glad to have seen it but sorry that its appeal remains elusive.JDnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-13130515869683740372010-02-23T01:47:29.381-08:002010-02-23T01:47:29.381-08:00Raj is actually, according to me, one selfish guy ...Raj is actually, according to me, one selfish guy who comes very close to actually saying, "MY way or the highway" to his lady love in that silent, inner-voice scene on the balcony. He drinks Cognac like it's coke & even promotes hard liquor to someone who probably has never sipped beer, he sleeps around (mentions of his previous gf abound), he's irreverent (the buying-beer scene), he plays a nasty trick on the old & the young alike by appearing like a nice guy all the while planning to break the engagement he's joyously promoting to everyone. There's nothing at all to like in Raj. It's a classic case of "love is blind" in Simran's case, IMO.

And yet, why was Raj so widely accepted, so celebrated, so praised? Same answer to the question of why Ajay wins our sympathy despite being a murdering monster in Baazigar, or Rahul winning cheers from the crowd despite him being a mental case on a homicidal rampage, or us simply taking it as a matter of course that Mandira will fall in love with Rizwan Khan despite many possible personal & societal rejections.

SRK knows how to play these unique or flawed characters in ways that the audience will identify with them. That's his 'magic'.Amihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14459004212652808197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79723819638700739.post-33080723397310946882009-02-13T04:22:00.000-08:002009-02-13T04:22:00.000-08:00Youtube video links are not working :(Youtube video links are not working :(Anindyahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01275279805564438467noreply@blogger.com
